AL nominates BNP’s Shahjahan Omar a day after release from jail

The ruling Awami League has nominated the main opposition party-BNP Vice-Chairman Shahjahan Omar for Jhalakathi -1 constituency to contest in the 12th general election, a day after his release from jail.

AL Deputy Office Secretary Sayem Khan confirmed the matter on Thursday evening.

The detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Shahjahan Omar from a house in the capital in the early hours of November 5 in a case of torching a bus in New Market area in Dhaka on November 4.

The BNP leader walked out of Jail on Wednesday after receiving bail. He quit the party on Thursday and submitted nomination paper to contest in the upcoming national elections from the ruling party (AL).

Earlier on Monday, the AL announced that they had nominated Bazlul Haq Harun as the party candidate for Jhalakathi-1.

Speaking at a press briefing at TCB Bhaban in the capital on Thursday evening, Shahjahan said he secured the ruling party ticket and submitted his nomination paper online.

“The leader [Sheikh Hasina] has given me the nomination,” he said, showing the nomination document.

On the other hand, the BNP has expelled Shajahan Omar from every positions of the party.

A press release signed by BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General on Thursday said that Shajahan Omar was expelled from all positions of the party as he broke the party discipline seriously.
