Ashrayon project playing vital role in alleviating poverty

Bangladesh’s Ashrayon project (Shelter project for the homeless) is empowering the marginalized people through inclusive development, as this housing project plays a vital role in alleviating poverty to help the country attain eight targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local level.

So far around 1 million families received such – homes across the country, giving shelter to more than 35 million people.

Recently the Commissioner of Dhaka Division Md. Sabirul Islam has visited in Kishoreganj’s Mohinandha Ashrayon project.

Commissioner Sabirul Islam said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s “Ashrayan” project has played a key role in achieving the goals of poverty and hunger eradication, gender equality and women’s empowerment, among others.

Her innovative project, to transform Bangladesh into a developed and prosperous country by 2041, has been able to bring about positive changes in inclusive development by aiming to provide houses for landless, homeless, and marginalised people across the country.

He was addressing an exchange views with Beneficiaries at Mohinondha Ashrayon project in Kishoreganj Sadar on Monday, while Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Abul kalam Azad was in the chair.

Among others, Deputy Secretary and Deputy Director in local Government (LG) Habibur Rahman, ADC (Revenue) Farhad Chowdhury, ADM Kazi Mohua, Upazila Chairman Abdullah Al-Mamun, UNO Mohammad Ali Siddique, District CAB president Alam Sarowar Alam Senior journalist Mostafa Kamal, Mohila Vice chairman Maduma Akhter and UP Chairman Liaqut Ali were present on the occasion.
It is noted that Kishoreganj District Administration distributed land among at least 2600 landless, houseless families and gave them semi -paka house in 13 upazila of the district.

“The scheme includes empowering women by giving them half ownership of land and houses, providing free electricity connection, providing clean water by installing one shallow tube well for every 5 families, and providing food assistance under three months of VGF to the resettled families initially.

Through this initiative, the society’s backward community has been given access to semi-finished housing and two decimals of land.

Later, Commissioner Sabirul distributed the Prime Minister’s gift of food items among the beneficiaries.
