Sixth consignment of uranium reaches Rooppur

The sixth consignment of ‘fresh nuclear fuel’ or uranium of the first unit of Rooppur nuclear power project has successfully reached Rooppur in Iswardi from Dhaka under strict security.

This shipment of uranium reached Ruppur project area from Dhaka through Bangabandhu Bridge via Banpara in Natore and Dashuria in Ishwardi in Pabna. Project workers welcomed the fleet as it entered the project area around 8.45 am on Friday.

According to project sources, uranium arrived in Dhaka by special plane on Thursday (November 2) like the previous five shipments from Russia. On Friday (November 3), the consignment left Dhaka by road and successfully reached Rooppur in Ishwardi.

Arvind Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Ishwardi police station, said that the sixth consignment of uranium reached Rooppur by road at 8.45 am through maximum security. The road was closed to other vehicles for some time when the convoy of vehicles carrying uranium arrived on the road.

Before this, the first shipment of uranium on September 29, the second on October 6, the third on October 13, the fourth on October 20 and the fifth shipment of uranium on October 27 successfully reached Rooppur in Ishwardi from Dhaka.

Out of the total seven shipments, one more shipment will arrive in the country. In the initial phase, two units of 2,400 MW each will generate electricity continuously for a year with the fuel coming in seven shipments.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is being implemented through an agreement between the Government of Bangladesh and the Rashan Federation.
