RMG workers torch police box, vehicles in Gazipur

Readymade garment (RMG) workers on Tuesday torched 13 vehicles including four motorcycles in different areas of Kaliakair Upazila of Gazipur while they were demonstrating for a higher salary structure.

Besides, the workers set fire to a traffic police box and a Walton showroom on Dhaka-Tangail highway in Chandra and Shafipur areas in the upazila Garment factory workers started protesting in various areas of Gazipur including Chandana Chowrasta and Bhogra Bypass of Gazipur City Corporation, Mouchak, Chandra and Palli Vidyut of Kaliakair Upazila demanding salary increase since the morning.

During the protest, the workers set fire to many vehicles and motorcycles in different areas of Kaliakair Upazila including Chandra, East ChandraBoardmill and others surrounding area of Chandra.

Raihan Mia, senior station officer of Kaliakair Fire Service office, confirming the arson attack on showroom and Police box, said three units of the fire fighters managed to douse the blaze at the Walton showroom around 3:00pm.

He also said they rushed to put out the blaze at Shafipur traffic police box, but the agitated workers did not allow them to do so.

Meanwhile, the workers vandalised a local clinic, Tanha Health Care Hospital, and several shops in Safipur area, a police official said to the media.

Demanding an increase in their wages, thousands of workers of several factories blocked the Baipail-Abdullahpur road in Jamgara and at different points in Narsingpur areas of Ashulia, Savar after 7:30am on Tuesday.
