Road accidents claim 21 lives daily: Report

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity said that an average of 21 people died due to road accidents every day from 2015 to 2022.

Apart from that, 39 injuries were reported daily during the same period.

The Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity disclosed the numbers on Saturday on the eve of the National Road Safety Day scheduled to be observed on Sunday.

Compiling the data from various media reports, the welfare group also said at least 61,616 people were killed in 44,171 road accidents in those eight years.

The Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity also said that 2015 witnessed 8,642 fatalities in 6,581 road crashes. The following year, in 2016, a total of 6,055 individuals lost their lives in 4,312 road accidents.

In 2017, some 7,397 people were killed in 4,979 road crashes, and in 2018 a total of 7,221 fatalities were reported from 5,514 road accidents.

In 2019, a total of 5,516 road accidents claimed the lives of 7,855 individuals. In 2020, there were 4,891 incidents that resulted in 6,686 fatalities.

Later in 2021, some 5,629 accidents led to the death of 7,809 people. And in 2022, some 6,749 accidents were responsible for 9,951 fatalities.
