Barishal journo freedom fighter SM Iqbal laid to rest

Veteran journalist and freedom fighter SM Iqbal was laid to rest on Thursday at Barishal Muslim Gorosthan following paying floral tributes at Barishal district Bar Association, Press Club and citizens respect at central Shaid Minar with state honour led by deputy commissioner of Barishal.

He died at his home at Anami Lane area of the city on Wednesday late afternoon leaving wife, two sons and a number of well-wishers, colleagues and friends. He was 79 at the time of demise.

SM Iqbal was the former councilor of Barishal municipality, former chairman of Banaripara Upazila Parishad, former president of Barishal Press Club, Cultural Organization Coordination Council, FPAB, Public Library and different socio-cultural organisation.

His death has cast a shadow of mourning among the journalist and residents of the city and region.

Leaders of different socio-cultural-professional-political organisations including mayor of Barishal City Corporation, expressing their deep condolence, visited his home and attended the funeral prayer and burial programmes from Wednesday night to Thursday late afternoon.
