Visually impaired people not burden of country: Dr Farhat Hossain

The visually impaired people are not burden of the nation rather they are asset, said Dr Farhat Hossain.

To mark the World White Cane Safety day 2023, the experts made the comment at a financial help and white cane distribution programme organised by Bangladesh National Society for the Blind on Sunday.

Speaking as a chief guest professor and also chairman of the Bangladesh National Society for the Blind and Vocational Training Center for the Blind (VTCB) Dr Farhat Hossain said starting with wooden bench the Bangladesh National Society for the Blind and VCTB now turned into a nationwide institution.

She gave all credits to the Bangladesh National Society for the Blind and VCTB’s former chairman Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, a renowned lawyer and former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader to expand the institutionnationwide.

Dr Farhat Hossain said the visually impaired people are a part of our society.

If they have got proper guidance and training they may turned into asset for the society as well as country also.

She further said we have been providing training by VCTB to make them important by breaking the superstition and social stigma as blind people are burden of family, society and country.

Ahead of the objective, the VCTB trained the visually impaired people in the sector of learning the Holy Quran with Brail system, developing computer skill, waving, stitching the clothes, making shopping bag and others, she added.

Dr Farhat Hossain said after completing the training successfully, VCTB provide them with certificates and financial assistance as the part of rehabilitation the visually impaired people in the society.

At the programme, Bangladesh National Society for the Blind’s Voce-chairman Md Joynal Abedin Khan, secretary (Acting) Nasrin K handakar, Treasurer Abul Baset Akan, member Nur-E- Alam Siddique (Visually Impaired), Chief Consultant of the Khandaker Mahbub Hossain Eye Hospital Dr Ali Ahashan and others were present.

An international conference was held in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo on October 4 in 1969 by the International Blind Organisation where white cane was recognized as the safety symbol for the blind people and October 15 as the World White Cane Safety Day.

Later, it was adopted unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly on December 9, 1975.

Maintaining that tradition, the day is being observed in Bangladesh every year along with the rest of the globe in a befitting manner by the government and non-government organisations.
