Asking for fresh application to send Khaleda abroad for treatment inhumane : Kayser

Staff Reporter :
Asking for a fresh application for sending BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia abroad for better treatment is inhumane said her lawyer Barrister Kayser Kamal.

The lawyer who is also the Legal Affairs Secretary of BNP said an application has already been submitted regarding the issue.

While talking to the reporters at the Supreme Court Mr Kayser Kamal said, “The physicians and the medical board concerned said the problems those Khaleda Zia is facing cannot be treated in the country.

Therefore, Khaleda Zia’s treatment should be done outside the country and it is not depending on an application. Providing proper medical care to save her life is a demand of the time and the people.”

The lawyer said, “On December 14 in 1990, the United Nations General Assembly accepted a declaration that said if a person is sentenced but needs to go abroad for better treatment then it is the responsibility of the government of that country to send him/her abroad.

In the wake of that declaration, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was sent to Germany for better treatment.”

He further said that Khaleda Zia can go abroad for treatment according to Articles 15 and 32 of the Bangladesh Constitution in addition to the international law.

On September 23, Law Minister Anisul Huq said an application must be submitted to the Home Ministry to allow BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to go abroad for better treatment.

The minister said this while talking to reporters in Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura upazila.

“The application must be submitted to the Home Ministry, which can ask the Law Ministry for its opinion.

A decision will be reached upon their formal submission,” he said.

The BNP chief has been suffering from multiple health complications, including arthritis, diabetes, kidney issues, liver problems, and heart diseases for a long time, said the medical board.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) from her cabin at Evercare Hospital in the capital recently.
