The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to grant bail to BNP leader Aman Ullah Aman, who recently landed in jail in a corruption case in which he was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment in 2007.
Justice M Enayetur Rahim, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division of the SC, sent Aman’s bail petition to its full Bench and fixed November 20 for holding hearing on the matter.
During the hearing on the bail petition, Aman’s lawyer AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan prayed to the apex court Chamber Judge to grant bail to his client, saying that he is very sick.
The SC Chamber Judge refused to grant bail as Aman has been sentenced to 13 years in prison in the case.
Justice Enayetur also asked the lawyer to place an instance that any Chamber Judge has granted bail to any convict who has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Lawyer Mahbub Uddin could not mention any such instance during the hearing.
On September 10, a Dhaka court sent Aman to jail rejecting his bail petition after he surrendered before it in connection with the graft case.
His wife Sabera was sent to prison on September 3 after she surrendered before the same court in the case.
She has been sentenced to three years in jail. The SC Chamber Judge on September 5 granted her bail till January 15, 2024.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on March 6, 2007, filed the case with Kafrul Police Station in Dhaka against Aman Ullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman.
On June 21, 2007, a court sentenced Aman to 13 years imprisonment and his wife to three years in jail in the case.
On May 30, the High Court upheld the lower court verdict that had sentenced Aman to 13 years in jail and his wife Sabera to three years.
It also asked them to surrender before the court within 15 days of getting the text of the verdict.
