BNP calls for all parties’ unity to oust AL from power

Staff Reporter :
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday called upon all political parties of the country to forge unity and take to the streets for the downfall of the Awami League regime and forming a neutral government to hold the next general election in an inclusive manner.

“Our country and our people are now in danger. It is our responsibility to protect them.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a big party or medium party or minor one….We all have to unite and come forward and take to the streets with that responsibility,” the BNP leader said while speaking at a discussion arranged by Ganosanghati Andolan, at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) marking its 21st founding anniversary.

The BNP leader said “We must pronounce our one-point demand loudly and ask the regime to quit.

Enough is enough. Now you (govt) please go and take steps for establishing a people’s state, a people’s parliament and a people’s society.”

“Otherwise, you (govt) will not get any escape route like previous dictators and autocrats,” he warned.

Mirza Fakhrul congratulated the leaders and workers of Ganosanghati Andolan on its founding anniversary and hoped that the party would be stronger in the days to come to work for the masses.

He said it is also necessary now to unite the people for restoration of democracy, and their voting and all other rights.

The BNP leader said it is encouraging that many opposition parties are now making the same demand for the resignation of the AL government.

Mirza Fakhrul lamented that though his party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has been suffering from critical diseases, the government is not allowing her to receive proper treatment abroad out of political vengeance.

Zonayed Saki, the chief coordinator of Ganosanghati Andolon, said, “The Awami League has put Bangladesh in danger and threat in terms of its independence and sovereignty only to secure its illegal power.

Saki said the Awami League has turned the country into an institution of a party and an instrument of oppression in the last 15 years.

Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said that the Awami League government will not be able to hold a ‘fake’ election again.

He said it while addressing a press conference at the party’s central office at Nayapaltan in the capital on Tuesday.

Replying to a query, Rizvi said, “If a leader of the BNP is jailed, another will hold the flag of democracy in his place.”

BNP organising secretary Abdus Salam Azad, executive committee member Abdus Sattar Patwary, Jubo Dal president Sultan Salauddin Tuku, general secretary (acting) Shafiqul Islam Milton, and others were present at the press conference.
