ACC seeks bank details of SK Sur
Staff Reporter :
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has asked the banks to send all kinds of information of bank transactions of Sitanshu Kumar (SK) Sur Chowdhury, a former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank.
Apart from this, the ACC has also sought the bank transaction information of his wife Suparna Sur Chowdhury and daughter Nandita Sur Chowdhury by September 7.
The ACC sent a letter to the banks requesting for submitting the information within the mentioned period.
The move has been taken on allegations of evasion of revenue through irregularities and corruption.
SK Sur Chowdhury retired as the deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank a few days ago.
In the letter, the ACC said, “Sitanshu Kumar (SK) Sur Chowdhury and his wife Suparna Chowdhury have been accused of evading revenue through irregularities and corruption.
Following this, a 3-member probe body has been formed comprising Deputy Director Md Nazmul Hussain, Assistant Director Afroza Haque Khan and Deputy Assistant Director Sabrina Zaman.”
In order to investigate the complaints properly, it is necessary to know whether there is any bank account, loan, FDR or savings certificate in the name of the accused persons in any branch of the bank (account opening form, submitted records, KYC, nominee, TP, signature card and related records including account statement), the letter said.
Earlier in July 2021, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) directed banks to freeze bank accounts of the former deputy governor of central bank and his spouse Suparna Sur Chowdhury on suspicion of tax evasion.
Prior to the freezing of bank accounts, the NBR had sought detailed information on all types of accounts and transactions of five persons, including SK Sur Chowdhury, and former Bangladesh Bank executive director Md Shah Alam and their spouses.
Earlier, a close associate of the alleged money launderer PK Halder confessed to a Dhaka court that Chowdhury and Alam had assisted them in carrying out the financial scams.
Alam was stripped of the responsibility of monitoring two central bank departments- Department of Financial Institutions and Markets (DFIM) and the Department of Banking Inspection-2-for his alleged connection with Halder following the confessional statement.
