Black-flag rally demands resignation of two apex court judges

Staff Reporter :
Pro-BNP lawyers of the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday held a black-flag rally demanding immediate resignation of two judges of the SC’s Appellate Division on an allegation that the judges have violated their oath by making political statements while addressing a discussion marking the National Mourning Day on August 15.

Hundreds of lawyers gathered at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCAB) building under the banner of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, a platform of the pro-BNP lawyers, at 1:30 pm on Wednesday for holding the rally.

Then they went to the highway through the gate of the High Court Mazar (shrine) with black flags in hand and chanted various slogans.

The black flag procession of the lawyers passed through the National Eidgah Maidan and Kadam Fountain and ended at the gate next to the Bangladesh Bar Council.

Lawyer Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan, President of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum SC unit, presided over the short rally, while Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, Secretary of the unit, conducted the program.

Barrister Kayser Kamal, central Secretary General of Jaityatabadi Ainjibi Forum, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Ruhul Quddus Kazal, former Secretaries of the SCBA, among others, gave speeches in the rally.

Addressing the judges, who were allegedly made political statements, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon said, “If you want to do politics, leave the post of judge and write your name in politics.”

Barrister Kayser Kamal said, “Those who considered themselves as ‘oath-bound politicians’, please resign.

No one can become a political leader by taking an oath. ‘Oath bound politician’ is a new term. Since you identified yourselves in that term, resign yourselves and at least save the Supreme Court.”
