Students of 7 DU-affiliated colleges stage protest blocking Nilkhet

DU Correspondent :
The students from seven colleges affiliated with Dhaka University (DU) blocked Nilkhat intersection in the city again on Sunday seeking the opportunity of promoting to the next year by relaxing the CGPA condition and protest ‘discrimination of DU authorities’ by staging a symbolic ‘mass suicide’ programme.
They started gathering at the Nilkhet intersection since noon, causing significant traffic congestion in various parts of the city.
Meanwhile, seven of the protesting students had to be taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) as they fell sick during the protest.
They staged the blockade at the intersection around 12.45 pm.
Earlier, they brought out a procession from TSC of Dhaka University to the Nilkhet intersection.
Earlier, they blocked the Nilkhat intersection for two times to press the demand.
However, the commuters suffered much as no vehicle could pass through the area during the protest and thereby heavy traffic jam in this area.
The people were forced to move forward on foot and sometimes it also seen that the agitating students tried to limitthe people movement on foot.
Taslim Chowdhury, coordinator of the Seven College Movement, said, “We met Supriya Bhattacharjee Ma’am, principal of Eden Mohila College, she assured us of fulfilling our demands earlier.
But we see no visible advancement in this process.
That’s why we again came here to press our demands.”
“We will not get back to home until our demands are being heard,” he added.
The students said, “We have been protesting for three months to give promotion opportunities through improvement.
Besides, the results have been declared late.
We have already prepared for the next year and completed the incourse and test examination.”
Mentioning that it is not possible to give exams in all the subjects of the previous year, the student said, “So, we want to relax the prescribed CGPA conditions and ask for promotion in the next year through improvement tests up to three subjects.”
