Low-lying areas likely to be affected by flood water

The river water of Teesta, Padma, Jamuna, Dhorla, Ganges and Brahmaputra will continue to increase in next 24 hours as result many char and low-lying areas and riverside villages are likely to be inundated by flood water further.

According to Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), most low lying areas of Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Sirajganj, and Tangail will be affected by flood water.

Water Development Board sources said that water of Jamuna River will cross danger level at Porabari point in Tangail within next 24 hours.

All the major rivers in north-eastern regions will also keep continue to increase, the FFWC report said.

Crops, including Aman paddies, jute, sesame, peanuts and vegetables likely to go under water in the char areas and riverside villages.

According to India Metrological Department (IMD), there are chances of heavy rainfalls very likely Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till August 18.

Low-lying areas in Lalmonirhat district have been flooded as the River Teesta is flowing 20 cm above the danger level at Dalia point due to continuous rainfall for the last few days until Monday and the onrush of upstream water.

The water flow at Dalia point of Teesta Barrage, the country’s largest irrigation project, was recorded at 52.35 cm at 6:00 am on Monday, 20 cm above the normal level of 52.15 cm.

People living near the barrage and on the river’s banks said the water flow of the river increased due to heavy downpour and the onrush of upstream water for the last few days.

All sluice gates were opened to control the water flow of the river, they said.

They said several hundred families have already been marooned and low-lying areas of the left banks of the river inundated after the river swelled.

Mominur Rahman, a resident from Mahiskhoca union under Gobordhan area, said they have to take boats to go to others’ houses due to flood.

Amsar Ali, who lives on the left river bank, said they are passing nights amid fear as the water is increasing in the river alarmingly.

Asfa-Ud-Doula, executive engineer of Water Development Board at Teesta Barrage’s Dalia Zone, said the low-lying areas on the banks of the river were inundated and all gates of the Teesta Barrage were opened to control the flow of water.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meteorology Department (BMD) on Monday forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers along with temporary gusty wind in all eight divisions of the country in the next 24 hours, as monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh.

“Light to moderate rain or thundershowers along with temporary gusty wind may occur at most places Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions; at many places over Dhaka, Mymensingh and Khulna divisions and at a few places over Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the north-eastern part of the country in next 24 hours till 9am tomorrow,” it said.
