At least five people were killed and several others remain missing after a picnic trawler sank in a branch of the River Padma near Subchani Bazar in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj.
The accident happened around 8:30pm on Saturday.
Lauhjong Fire Service Station Officer Qais Ahmed said, “We have recovered five bodies. A diving team is coming from Dhaka.”
Outshahi Union Parishad Chairman Md Sekander Bepari said, “There were 46 people in the trawler.”
Meanwhile, Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance and Administration) Suman Dev could not confirm the number of death and missing persons.
The incident took place around 8:30pm when a sand laden trawler hit the boat near Subchani Bazar in Autshahi union of Tongibari upazila, reports our Munshiganj correspondent quoting Louhajang Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Qayes Ahmed.
“We have recovered the bodies of five people. Four of them have already been sent to a local hospital. A diving team is coming from Dhaka to comb the river.”
At least 46 people were on the boat.
Several people went missing following the capsize.
Police and fire service are already on the spot to start rescue operations.
Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance and Administration) Suman Dev said he was going to the spot.
