Prices of chicken, egg, chilli shoot up

The prices of all kind of chickens, eggs and green chilli again are showing upward trend while vegetables remained still at high price putting an extra pressure on the common people to maintain their daily life.
The price of broiler chicken has surged by Tk20 to Tk30 per kilogram in the span of a week.
Traders in the Karwan Bazar kitchen market attributed the price escalation to a shortage in supply.
Mohammad Yunus, a seller in Karwan Bazar, said they raised chicken prices to Tk185 to Tk190 per kg on Friday, from Tk160 to Tk165/kg a week ago.
The price of eggs has also risen by Tk5 per dozen to Tk150.
The green chilli is being sold at Tk 160 per kg in the capitals market.
The prices of vegetables, which increased heavily after Eid-ul-Azha, have remain stable without increasing.
At markets in the capital including Karwan Bazar and Hatirpool Bazar, the price of korolla (bitter melon) is being sold at Tk75 per kg while kakrol (spiny gourds) and eggplants sold at Tk60 per kg.
Aubergine sold for Tk 80-60 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 40 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 70-80 a kilogram, bottle gourd for Tk 60-70 apiece, beans for Tk 50-60 a kilogram, cucumber for Tk 50-60 a kilogram and carrot for Tk 30-40 a kilogram on Friday.
Mohammad Alim, a vegetable seller in Hatirpool, said “I bought 5 kg of eggplants at a wholesale rate of Tk250. The wholesale price of 5 kg of bitter melons is Tk350 on Friday.”
The vegetable prices remain stable though their ample supply in the market, he added.
Mohammad Sujan, a vegetable seller in Hatirpool area, said, “Today (Friday) I bought about 4.5 maund (180 kg) of vegetables at Tk7,500.
Local onions sold at Tk65 per kg while potatoes sold at Tk40 per kg in Hatirpool bazar.
Meanwhile, the mill owners have not reduced the price of sugar yet after raising it without the government’s approval around a week ago. The retail price of sugar was Tk140 per kg on Friday.
However, in some areas, a one-kg packet of sugar was sold for Tk160 on Friday.
The Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation’s packaged red sugar was also sold at Tk160 per kg.
The price of beef remained high over the week and the item was sold for Tk 780-800 a kilogram on the markets in the capital on Friday.
The price of mutton also remained high and the item was sold for Tk 1,100-1,200 a kilogram on the day.
The coarse variety of rice was sold for Tk 48-50 a kilogram on Friday.
According to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh’s data, the price of coarse rice has increased by Tk2 per kg within a week. Varieties of coarse rice, like Swarna and Iri, sold at Tk48-50 per kg last week, which currently sell at Tk48-52 per kg.
