‘Govt does not have enough money to buy Gayeshwar’

Staff Reporter :
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a standing committee member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on Sunday said that he did not eat the food arranged by the detective of branch (DB) of the police at its office.

But at the request of DB Chief Harun-or-Rashid and as a gesture of civility, he ate a piece of fish, vegetables and some rice, which were brought from the residence of the police officer, as lunch, the BNP standing committee member said.

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy made the remarks at the BNP Naya Paltan central office replying to queries of journalist over viral photos that showed him eating food at the DB office after he was picked up by the police from Dholaikhal area of the capital Dhaka during the party’s sit-in programme .

He also said that the food arranged for him at the DB office was not suitable for his health and he also had doubts about the food. That’s why he didn’t take that food anymore, he said.

Earlier on Saturday, Gayeshwar was seen being beaten by the police while participating in the sit-in protest.

“No temptation from the government can buy Gayeshwar. The government does not have that much money to buy Gayeshwar,” he said in reply to a query.

The government has the power to arrestand even take lives. But you can’t buy Gayeshwar, he said.

“The DB chief requested me that the fish has been brought from his Kishoreganj village. And since the DB chief himself was eating the food, I thought if I ate it, it wouldn’t be a problem. So, I just honored his request,” Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said.

He, however, said that the circulation of videos of it on various social media was a very disgusting act.

‘It’s a kind of joke,’ he said, adding that those who did it showed a very poor mentality. ‘Does the government want to prove that we are pauper? Begging and eating? …A lot of people eat in my house at different times.

It’s a great honour for me. But should I take pictures of this food and spread it on various social media? Would that be good for me?’ he asked.

‘My prayer to God is that we can see the fall of this government before we go to the pyre.

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy expressed hope that the ongoing people’s movement will be successful.’
