Govt not to go beyond constitution over next polls: AL
Staff Reporter :
Awami League General Secretary and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said the government would not go beyond the constitution over the next general election.
“We are only to follow the constitution over holding the next national polls. We do not accept the BNP-like caretaker government.
We do not agree with BNP’s election time government even,” Obaidul Quader said while addressing a brief AL rally at the Institute of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) prior to its ‘peace and development procession’.
The AL general secretary marked the BNP’s road march as ‘defeat march.’
“What did Fakhrul say today? Their road march programme is a victory march. Actually it’s their march towards defeat, towards fall,” Obaidul Quader said.
The ruling party leader questioned over the BNP’s gain from the recent visit of the foreign delegates.
“Has the European Union given the BNP Sheikh Hasina’s resignation or resignation of the government? Or a caretaker government? What has the BNP got? Nothing.”
“Delegation from the United States has also come. The BNP thought that the US would ask the government to restore the caretaker government system or say to hold dialogues. But that did not happen,” the ruling party leader said.
Obaidul Quader said, “There will be no caretaker government system or dissolution of the parliament. There is no question of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.”
Sheikh Hasina will perform the duties of the government during the election like other democratic countries of the world, the Bridges Minister said. The next polls will be held under the Election Commission as per the constitution, he said.
“We will not move a bit from this stance. No matter how many threats are delivered, the Awami League will not bow to anyone on this issue.”
The ruling party’s ‘peace and development’ procession began after ending Obaidul Quader’s speech.
A large number of activists were marching, while some boarded pickups, trucks and on motorcycles. Vehicular movement has been stopped in the streets that stretch from Ramna area to Elephant Road The event started at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, at 4pm.
Awami League leaders and activists gathered at the peace rally venue before starting the rally.
Dhaka city South Awami League arranged the event. Alongside party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Awami League central leaders have delivered speeches at the program.
