‘And men have lost their reason’

Syed Tosharaf Ali :
The United States of America stands unrivalled as the sole superpower in today’s unipolar world. With its vast wealth, capital, technological advancements, military might, and esteemed universities, America currently assumes the leadership of the capitalist and democratic realm.

During the era when the world was divided into two ideological camps, capitalism and socialism, the Soviet Union reigned as the leader of the socialist bloc, while the United States held the mantle of the capitalist or free world. However, in the 1980s, the USSR was struck by a severe economic crisis, and in 1989, without the need for armed conflict, it disintegrated, leading to the dissolution of its united front. The former Eastern European countries were liberated from the subjugation of the Soviet Union, and from its remnants emerged the Russian Federation, which no longer retained its socialist character. Nevertheless, the Russian Federation, inheriting the vestiges of a one-party system, continues to exert its influence through its veto power within the United Nations.
The once-bipolar world transitioned into a unipolar order, with the United States assuming supreme authority across all realms. However, in recent times, the Russian Federation, under the leadership of Putin, has posed a challenge to this American dominance, seeking to assert its power and influence on the global stage.

Last year we witnessed the aggressive march of the Russian Federation’s army into Ukraine, a sovereign nation. Shockingly, the European countries turned a blind eye to Ukraine’s plight, failing to offer the protection it desperately needed. Amidst this dire situation, only the United Kingdom and the United States have stood by Ukraine, while the anticipated anti-war movement remains conspicuously absent. The absence of a resounding voice against this war is deeply concerning.

The working class, who bear the brunt of the conflict’s consequences, are enduring immense suffering. Yet, there is a baffling absence of demonstrations and protests against this war. What has transpired to render the people silent? Is it sheer fear that has stifled their outcry? President Putin, the leader of the Russian Federation, has unabashedly threatened European countries by deploying nuclear weapons with the explicit intention of targeting them. However, the peace-loving Europeans seem to be in a state of slumber. Have they become excessively dependent on the Russian Federation? Or is it an unfortunate display of cowardice?

Such passivity in the face of aggression is alarming and demands immediate attention. The European nations must rise from their complacency and act with resolve. The time for action is now, as silence and inaction only serve to encourage those who threaten the peace and stability of the region. The European countries must demonstrate courage, unity, and a commitment to defending their values.
What about China and India? In the past, China imparted valuable teachings on the classification of war, distinguishing between just and unjust conflicts. Now the question arises: Is the attack on Ukraine by Russian Federation justified or unjustified? Furthermore, does the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party’s “active neutrality” stance in this war adequately address this issue? They assert they are constructing a unique form of socialism called “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics.” Can this representation claim to embody the essence of that particular brand of socialism?
What is the extent of India’s contribution as a peace-loving nation? While being a significant strategic partner of the US, India’s role thus far has yet to be influential. Regrettably, there lacks a philosopher akin to Russell, a poet reminiscent of Rabindranath, or a statesperson like Mahatma Gandhi or Nelson Mandela who can rally the global community against war, champion moral values unwaveringly, and restore hope, love, and trust. Unfortunately, it appears that “men have lost their reason.”

The present state of affairs is a clear indication of the decline of humanity. Pursuing business interests has taken precedence, while individuals are preoccupied with safeguarding their self-interest. Regrettably, the resounding call to uphold the rule of law, ensure accountability and transparency, protect human rights, and uphold democratic values is being disregarded. It is crucial to acknowledge that we, as human beings, possess the power of thought and judgment. Therefore, we must contemplate the future of humanity.
Today is not the final day, and it should be recognised that no powerful ruler can sustain their authority for an extended period by instilling fear, fostering mistrust, and perpetuating the killing of innocent lives. History has repeatedly taught us this truth. Hence, it is essential to put an end to war, starting with the banning of nuclear weapons. Corruption must be eradicated from the political landscape, and the practice of democracy should be a constant agenda rather than a mere pre-election facade. Party leaders are incumbent upon upholding the principles of democratic centralism within their respective parties.

Those who adhere to democratic values, such as the Americans and the Indians, should sincerely advise their development partners to follow their path of honesty and integrity. By doing so, misunderstandings and tensions can be alleviated. However, we must acknowledge the age-old question: have you ever witnessed a cat that dislikes fish? Nevertheless, let us collectively strive for a better future that holds promise and potential for all.
