Flood improves in Kurigram, Sunamganj

The overall floods situations in North and North-Eastern regions have started to improve as water level in most rivers of the districts are receding.
According to Flood Forecasting and Flood Warning Centre (FFWC), the Ganges, Padma and Jamuna rivers are in a rising trend, which may continue in the next 48 hours, while the Brahmaputra river is in a falling trend.
All the major rivers in the North-eastern region of the country are in a falling trend, which may continue in the next 24 hours, the FFWC bulletin said.
Except the river Dudhkumar, all the rivers in Kurigram, including river Teesta, Brahmaputra and Dharla, are now flowing below the danger level, Mehadi Hasan, Assistant Engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) said.
He, however, said that the flood situation in the low-lying areas of Kurigram district may continue improving in the next 24 hours.
River water of Surma is decreasing and flood situation of Sunamganj district has improved, WDB sources said.
Habiganj WDB Executive Engineer Shameem Hasnain Mahmud said water of Khwai river is flowing below the danger mark, which may continue next 48 hours.

However, there is shortage of dry food and clean water as people have been stranded for 4 to 5 days due to flood water. There is also a shortage of cattle fodder and fuel. People are deprived of sanitation facilities due to the flood as well.
According to the district relief and rehabilitation office, 185 villages of 45 unions under the district have been affected by the ongoing flood. As many as 62,880 people have become victims of river erosion and floods.
Additionally, five educational institutions were completely damaged and two partially damaged.
Deputy commissioner Mohammad Saidul Arif said 650 tonnes of rice and Tk 10 lakh in cash have been allocated for the flood victims. Of these, 275 tonnes of rice and Tk 9 lakh have been disbursed already.
‘In addition, 361 temporary and 18 permanent shelters are ready for the flood affected people. We have 275 shallow boats ready, including four rescue boats, to rescue the flood victims. We are ready to deal with any kind of emergency,’ he added.
The flood situation in Teesta river basins remains unchanged despite water level receding.
Over half a crore people are marooned in flood water and staying in untold sufferings, locals said.
According to Kurigram WDB sources, the water of Dudhkumar river was flowing 9 cm above the danger level at 9 am on Sunday.
On the other hand, the water of Dharla 14 cm at Kurigram Sadar point, Brahmaputra 35 cm at Nunkhawa point, Teesta 30 cm at Chilmari point were flowing below the danger level.
