DMP Commissioner to step down if police fail to maintain neutrality

Staff Reporter :
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq has assured that his force will carryout duties “impartially” in the by-election to the Dhaka-17 parliamentary seat otherwise he will leave the job.

“We normally see the law and order situation and equal importance will be given to all areas. We will consider – where the risk is high and low. As such force deployment will be high or less. According to the instructions given by the Election Commission regarding the Dhaka by-election, all necessary measures will be taken for holding a fair poll. If there is no100 percent neutrality of the police in this election, I will leave as DMP commis

sioner rubbing my nose in it,” the DMP boss said.
He pledged to “step aside” from his position if the police fail to demonstrate neutrality during the election.
The Election Commission met with law enforcement agencies on Tuesday at its Sher-e-Bangla Nagar offices ahead of the Jul 17 by-polls.
Representatives from various security agencies attended the meeting, alongside officials from the home ministry.
Afterwards, EC Secretary Jahangir Alam said that in addition to the Dhaka-17 by-polls, voting will take place in 75 areas across the country. In Dhaka, traditional ballot papers will be used to cast votes.
“Our message is [that we want] to hold a fair and free election. We have complete trust in the police.”

DMP Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq said the law enforcement agency will take all necessary steps to ensure a fair electoral process.
“Our neutrality will be fully demonstrated. I have given a 100 percent guarantee. If not, I will resign in disgrace as DMP commissioner,” he said.
He also said the law enforcement agency’s ongoing special drive will be continuing until the capital becomes free of muggers. “We have names of around six thousand muggers in our database. Our job is to arrest them and bringing them to justice. We arrest them and send them to jail. But they come out after securing bail through the legal process,” he said while talking to journalists at National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation here on Tuesday morning.

The DMP chief was visiting Independent Television journalist Rakibul Hasan, who was injured in an attack by a group of muggers recently.
“Some stray incidents of mugging took place during the Eid holidays in the capital. We had arrested many muggers before the Eid. Yet, these sad incidents took place. Our special drive against the muggers is going on and this will continue till making the capital free of these criminals. We will do whatever is needed for this,” he added. The DMP commissioner said they have arrested all the criminals involved in the killing of police constable Moniruzzaman and two involved in the attack on journalist Rakibul Hasan.
“Of those two, one used to work as a Pathao rider and another as electrician. Apart from their main job, they used to rob people now and then,” Khandker Golam Faruq further said.
