Pressure increased on the Dhaka-Tangail highway for homebound passengers
Staff Reporter :
A four-day vacation of Eid-ul-Azha begins today (Tuesday) as the Eid is going to be celebrated on 29 June. As a result, all the government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous organizations employees and RMG workers started their Eid journey making pressure on the highways.
It was seen on the spot that people of various classes and professions have taken the way home from Dhaka, Gazipur and surrounding industrial areas to spend Eid holidays with their families. However, there is a fear of suffering as there are markets of sacrificial animals, animal carriers and fruit carts on the highway.
The highest pressure of vehicles on the road is in Chandra Trimor area of Kaliakair upazila.
Talking to the media, the highway police said that there are about 5,000 small and big industries in the industrial zone of Gazipur. These factories are going to be closed gradually from this afternoon.
As lakhs of factory workers have started journey to go home to celebrate their Eid vacation with families, the traffic congestion on the highways has started.
Local people say that one of the causes of traffic jams and suffering can be the temporary animal markets built on the side of the highway. 17 temporary animal markets have been set up in Gazipur city this year.
Malek’s House, Board Bazar, Gazipura and Tongi Road have a few animal markets on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. Animal trucks, pickups vans entering and exiting these markets disrupt the movement of vehicles on the highway.
Apart from this, there is a fear of increasing traffic congestion due to the parking of animal vehicles in front of the market and temporary shops built around the market.
