NGO worker beaten to death for asking for installments

An employee of non-governmental organization (NGO) BRAC was allegedly beaten to death for demanding loan installments in Savar, Dhaka. Savar Model Thana police have arrested a garment factory worker named Shaheen Ali (22) in the case of this incident.
Dhaka Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullahil Kafi gave this information at a press conference at the police station on Thursday afternoon.
Earlier on Wednesday evening, after receiving a call to 999, the police recovered the body of the BRAC worker named Rezaul Karim from under the stairs of Asaduzzaman’s house in Rajfulbaria Bhawalipara area of Tentuljhora union of the upazila. He is the son of deceased Sekender Ali of Chougacha village under Bhanguria police station in Pabna.
Arrested in Rezaul’s murder, Shaheen Ali’s house is in Anupampur village under Charghat police station of Rajshahi district. He works in a local garment factory from rent on the ground floor of that house in Bhawalipara.
BRAC’s Savar headquarters branch officer Razia Sultana told Samakal on Thursday night that Shaheen Ali had taken a loan of Tk 20,000 from them. There was an installment of Rs 2,500 per month. Field worker Rezaul Alam went to collect that money.
According to the police, Rezaul went to Shaheen on Tuesday to bring the installment money. He (Shahin) promised to pay on Wednesday. Accordingly, when Rezaul went to that house, there was an argument between the two. At one point, Shaheen started beating him. Rezaul fell to the ground after being kicked in the testicles during the severe beating. He died on the spot.
