Job seekers block Shahbagh intersection over age limit extension

Hundred of students from different colleges and universities blocked the capital’s Shahbagh intersection for about five hours on Saturday demanding raising of the age limit for entry into the government jobs form the existing 30 to 35 years as per the election manifesto of Awami League government.
Halting traffic, about two thousands students took part in the protest through forming a large circle blocking the roundabout and a good number of them sat in the middle of the circle. The demonstrators were raising various slogans in favour of their demands.
The blockade was continuing till filing of this report at 7:30pm.
During the protest, Shoriful Islam Shuvo, convener of the movement body, announced that they would continue the protest until the government concede to their demand.
“Concerned senior officials of the government, especially of the Public Administration Ministry, should come forward with specific proposals aimed at a fair solution to our demand for which we have been waging the movement for a long time. We will not leave the street until our demands are met, ” he said.
However, the commuters were suffering much as no vehicle could pass through the area during the protest. People were also seen walking to their destinations.
Earlier, on this morning, the protesters gathered in front of National Museum and as their number increasedthey blocked the intersection.
The protesters also tore apart the photocopies of their academic certificatesand sent an open later to the Prime Minister by releasing balloons.
Shah Jahan, former student of Kabi Nazrul Govt College, said, “We were forced to complete the our-years honours in five years and one-year masters in three and a half years for session jam and Covid-19 outbreak.”
Expressing despair, he said, “We took preparations for government job and are still doing the same, but the age has now become a barrier for us to entry into service. Instead of becoming reliever, we have become a burden of the family.”
