‘RTI Act effective for ensuring transparency, accountability’

Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) Dr Abdul Malek described the Right to Information (RTI) Act as a very effective one to help write investigative reports containing appropriate information as well as ensure transparency and accountability.
“Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had brought an independent country for us. Now the country is marching forward in an indomitable speed. Transparency and accountability is the prime staircase in this journey and the RTI Act is one of its weapons,” he said.

Dr Malek said these on the thirty-first ultimo while presiding over the inaugural ceremony of a workshop titled ‘Mass Media and Investigative Journalism in Right to Information’ at Information Commission Bangladesh in the city’s Agargaon area, reports BSS.
The Information Commission organized the workshop to encourage journalists for utilizing the RTI Act in making investigative reports.

The CIC sought opinions, experiences and knowledge from media personalities and journalists for increasing the use of RTI Act.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha Managing Director and Chief Editor Abul Kalam Azad addressed the function as the chief discussant while Jatiya Press Club President Farida Yasmin spoke on the occasion as the special guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Abul Kalam Azad said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government formulated the RTI Act for the people’s welfare.
Former Information Commissioner Nepal Chandra Sarkar read out the keynote while Information Commission Secretary (on routine charge) Dr Md Abdul Hakim moderated the function.
Senior journalists from print and electronic media took part in the daylong workshop.
