Rooppur NPP: Core Barrel installed
Ishwardi (Pabna) Correspondent :
The under-construction Rooppur Nuclear Power Project at Ishwardi is getting ready for the first unit fuel load. “Core barrel” has already been installed, said the media of Rosatom. On Tuesday (May 30) night, the installation of the ‘core barrel’ was reported.
It is known that ‘core barrel’ is one of the important equipment inside the reactor. Inside this is placed the fuel assembly and baffle. Nuclear reactions are organized in fuel assemblies. The bottom of the core barrel has a number of holes to hold the coolant (preferably demineralized water). Flowing through it keeps the outer shell of the fuel rod (uranium) cool. The core barrel is designed in such a way that the coolant inlet and outlet are separate. It shields the reactor pressure vessel from neutrons and gamma radiation.
The core barrel, made of a special type of stainless steel, is an integral part of the reactor. It weighs 73.74 tons, has a length of 35.66 feet, and a diameter of 11.84 feet.
Incidentally: The country’s first nuclear power plant under construction at Rooppur in Ishwardi upazila with the financial and technical support of Russia is currently in the final stages of implementation.
