SC affirms verdict clearing Falu in relief scam case

Staff Reporter :
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday affirmed its earlier verdict that upheld the High Court judgement which cleared BNP leader Mosaddek Ali Falu from trial proceedings of a relief scam case filed during the regime of army-backed caretaker government in 2007.

A full Bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique dismissed a review petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), challenging its earlier verdict delivered on June 2, 2021 upholding the HC judgement.

Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared for Falu, while lawyer AKM Fazlul Haque represented the ACC.

The ACC filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station against Falu and few others on charge of misappropriating the government’s relief materials in 2007.

Later, a Dhaka court framed charges against Falu and some other people in the case.
Following a petition filed by Falu challenging the trial proceedings of the case, the HC on March 7, 2018 quashed the proceedings.
Later on, ACC filed the appeal with the SC challenging the HC verdict. The Appellate Division on June 2 in 2021 dismissed the ACC petition. Then the ACC filed a petition seeking review of the Appellate Division’s verdict.
