Karwan Bazar traders resist DNCC eviction drive

Staff Reporter :
Local traders of Karwan Bazar resisted Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) officials during a drive to remove illegal and risky establishments inside the market on Thursday.
They started protesting thirty minutes after the drive began around 11:30 am, said DNCC Regional (Zone-5) Officer and Executive Magistrate Mutakabbir Ahmed.
According to DNCC officials, there are about 176 shops in the market. In April, a notice was sent to traders as the market was risky. Following the notice, DNCC officials came to vacate the place, he added.
Traders were informed several times that the market might collapse at any moment, he said.
Meanwhile, the traders claimed that they were not given enough time to move the goods from the market. DNCC has not even provided alternative places for conducting business. That is why they are protesting the eviction operation.
