Bumper yield of BRRI Dhan-96 in Haor Region

For the first time in Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj, high yielding BRRI Dhan-96 has been cultivated. Extensive yield has been obtained by experimentally cultivating this new variety of rice. By saving the seeds, it will be spread in the whole upazila in the future, the concerned said.
It is known that for the first time, a new breed of high-yielding Bri rice96 developed from the Rice Research Institute has been cultivated on the four bigha land of Zubair Ahmad, a farmer of Balijuri village in the upazila.
Zubair Ahmad was encouraged to cultivate this variety of rice experimentally. It has higher yield than other high yielding varieties of rice. Insect infestation and diseases have also reduced.
According to Upazila Agriculture Office sources, BRRI Dhan 96 is a new variety of high yielding rice. Its yield is higher than other rice. This type of rice is delicious to eat. It is a high protein rich rice. It has more protein than any other variety of rice. After cooking, the rice also becomes a little longer.
This type of rice plant is short and its root is strong. Hence it is also very suitable for mechanical harvesting due to not easily falling. Its color is golden. Which can also be called Swarna type. The life span of this rice is 140-145 days.
The average height of a fully grown tree is 87cm. It yields up to seven tons per hectare on an average. Yields can be increased with proper care.
It has been planted on four bigha of land in this upazila under the Sarisha-Boro-Ropa Amon cropping program from the Rice Research Institute. This year the seeds are being saved. In the future, its cultivation will be expanded in the entire upazila.
Zubair Ahmad, a farmer of Balijuri village in the upazila, has cultivated this variety of rice on four bigha of land. Almost the paddy of the four bigha area has been harvested. They got 23 maunds of paddy per bigha. Which is more than other high yielding varieties. They said that in the future they will cultivate it on a large scale. Farmer Zubair said, on the advice of the agriculture department, we cultivated a new variety of Bri rice-96 on two bigha land. It has reduced the number of diseases. So the yield is much higher.
He said, I cultivated Bri rice-28 last year. It yielded 18-20 maunds of paddy per bigha. This year I cultivated Bri rice-96. Yields have also been bumper. I got 23 maunds of paddy per bigha. Which is more than other types of rice. Besides, I have cooked and eaten this type of rice. I like the taste too.
Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Mohammad Md. Shafiqul Islam said, a new variety of high-yielding Bri Dhan-96 was cultivated for the first time in the upazila. It has yielded a lot. Its cultivation will increase in the future.
In this regard, Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Hasan Ud Daula said that this rice has more protein content than any other type of rice. It is possible to meet the protein requirement by eating rice. Its yield is also high. This year the seed is being saved by planting it in small quantities.
Sample paddy cutting in Tahirpur
Under the supervision of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Bangladesh, a head to head demonstration plot sample crop was harvested in Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj organized by Friends in Village Development Bangladesh (FIVDB)On Tuesday (May 2). A sample crop cutting ceremony was organized in Balijuri village of Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj.
A total of 5 varieties of rice (Bri Dhan101, Bri Dhan96, Bri Dhan88, Bri Dhan67 and Bri Dhan28) were harvested in the plot.
The Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Department, Sylhet Region was present at the sample crop cutting ceremony. Mohammad Kazi Mojibur Rahman, Directorate of Agriculture Extension, Sunamganj Additional Deputy Director Md. Shawkat Osman Majumdar, Tahirpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Hasan Ud Daula, Deputy Agriculture Officer Md. Shafiqul Islam, FIVDB Project Officer Md. Saiful Islam. At that time, 20/25 farmers of Balijuri village including farmer Zubair Ahmed.
In the presence of all, the harvested paddy is threshed and the yield of the varieties is obtained. Bri Dhan101 =5.80 tons/ha, Bri Dhan96 =7.11 tons/ha, Bri Dhan88 = 6.09 tons/ha, Bri Dhan67 =5.70 tons/ha and Bri Dhan28 =4.94 tons/ha.
Farmer Zubair Ahmed said Bri Dhan96 is a very suitable variety for Haor region. In the short term, diseases and insects are less, leafhoppers are less and the yield is high, so in the next Boro season, this variety of rice will be cultivated on more land.
It should be noted that, in order to select regionally-based modern high-yielding rice varieties and rapidly expand modern varieties at the field level, a head-to-head exhibition was held in Balijuri village of Tahirpur Upazila of Sunamganj in collaboration with Friends in Village Development Bangladesh (FIVDB) under the supervision of International Rice Research Institute (ERI), Bangladesh. has been deleted.
Through this, farmers are able to cultivate high yielding varieties of paddy. This year Bri Dhan 96 has created a huge response among the farmers of Haor region.
