Jahangir Alam’s nomination cancelled in GCC polls

Staff Reporter :
The Returning Officer for the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls has cancelled the nomination paper of mayoral candidate of suspended mayor Mohammad Jahangir Alam on the plea of loan defaulter.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Jahangir Alam termed the returning officer’s decision for cancelling his nomination paper as ‘undemocratic’ and said he will appeal to the Election Commission against the returning officer’s decision.

Returning Officer Md Faridul Islam cancelled the nomination paper on Sunday mentioning that Jahangir Alam, who submitted nomination papers as a mayoral candidate, was a loan defaulter.

However, Jahangir’s mother, Zayeda Khatun, who is also running for the post of mayor, was declared a valid candidate. Returning Officer Md Faridul Islam said, “All the documents submitted by Jahangir Alam are correct. But according to a report from the Bangladesh Bank, an institution for which he was the guarantor defaulted on a loan. That is why his nomination was rejected, but he has opportunity to file appeal.”

According to the Returning Officer, Jahangir Alam, his lawyer and bank representative were present at the time.

Talking to reporters after rejection the nomination paper, Jahangir Alam said that he mortgaged his own land for humanitarian reasons to save an industrial establishment and even he didn’t own the money and the company paid the money.

“Cancellation of my nomination paper by the Returning Officer is undemocratic. I did not get impartiality and justice from the commission. I will file appeal to the High Court or the Supreme Court,” Jahangir Alam said.
