Kabori’s 2nd death anniversary observed

Yesterday (April 17) was the 2nd death anniversary of legendary film actress Sarah Begum Kabori.
The National Film Award winning actress Kabori was born on July 19, 1950 in Chattogram. She started her acting career at the age of 14 with renowned filmmaker Subhas Dutta’s ‘Sutorang’ in 1964.
Kabori starred with Razzak in more than 20 films together since Dutta’s ‘Abirbhab’ in 1968; the movies include ‘Nil Akasher Niche’ (1969), ‘Deep Nebhe Nai’ (1970), and ‘Ka Kha Ga Gha Umo’ (1970).
During her long career, she worked with several noted actors, including, Razzak, Farooque, Bulbul Ahmed, Alamgir, Sohel Rana, Ujjal, Wasim, Khan Ataur Rahman, Golam Mustafa, Anwar Hossain and ATM Shamsuzzaman.
Kabori acted in several movies with Farooque in the 1970s, notably ‘Sujon Sokhi’ and ‘Sareng Bou’. She also starred with Bulbul Ahmed in Chashi Nazrul Islam’s ‘Devdas’ (1982). She acted in the 1973 film ‘Titash Ekti Nadir Naam’ by Ritwik Ghatak, an Indian filmmaker.
She also acted in an Urdu film ‘Bahana’ by Zahir Raihan with co-actor Rahman. The movies in which she paired up with Razzak became classics in the history of Bangladeshi cinema.
Razzak-Kabori pair is to be considered the best pair in Bangladeshi cinema.
Kabori acted in a number of popular movies, including ‘Nil Akasher Niche’, ‘Mainamati’, ‘Dheu-er Por Dheu’, ‘Porichoy’, ‘Odhikar’, ‘Beiman’, ‘Abak Prithibi’, ‘Sonali Akash’, ‘Deep Nebhe Nai’, ‘Bahana’, ‘Heeramon’, ‘Nishi Holo Bhor’, ‘Abirbhab’, ‘Titash Ekti Nodir Naam’, ‘Sareng Bou’, ‘Shujon Shokhi’, ‘Koto Je Minoti’, ‘Kach Kata Hire’, ‘Rong Baaz’, ‘Bodhu Biday’, ‘Masud Rana’ and ‘Devdas’.
Kabori made her directorial debut in 2006 with the movie ‘Ayna’. She later began working on ‘Ei Tumi Sei Tumi’, her second movie as director, with a grant from the government in fiscal year 2018-2019 but has left it unfinished.
In 1971, Kabori went to Kolkata where she played an important role in creating public opinion in favour of Bangladesh’s independence.
She spoke at various events and organised cultural programmes. After returning to the new-born country, her focus turned to acting in films.
Kabori received the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the movie ‘Sareng Bou’ (1978).
In 2008, Kabori was elected to the National Parliament in Bangladesh from Narayanganj-4 for 9th Bangladesh Parliament.
During 1971 Liberation War, she participated by donating blood to help the freedom fighters.
The actress breathed her last on April 17 in 2021.
