Massive fire shattered Eid momentum for New Market, other traders

After the huge pre-dawn fire destroyed thousands of shops on Saturday at the New Super Market, an extension of old New Market, traders are lamenting and said that this fire has destroyed all of their dreams to recover their businesses ahead of Eid ul-Fitr.
Not only the ravaged 1275 shops in New Super Market, the markets around the New Market area are also lost its Eid momentum as few customers are moving and day long power cut in number of markets adjacent to the fire gutted market.
Right after the fire incident last Saturday, the number of shoppers in Newmarket has decreased significantly. Traders said that the number of buyers in new market area is low due to panic over the fire and intense heat, ongoing power cut in the affected area.
After visiting the debris area and its surroundings on Sunday it was seen that, Globe Shopping Center, Jahan Mansion, Badruddoja Super Market, Nehar Bhawan Shopping Complex, Dhanmondi Hawkers Market, Chandrima Market, Chadni Chowk Market, and Gauchia Market were less crowded. Shops started to open after 12.00 noon and several buyers are moving sporadically in the market. Even on the footpath, fewer customers are buying their required products than on other days.
After the fire in New Super Market, Chandrima Super Market forced to close from Saturday morning . The traders of this market started opening their shops around 12 noon on Sunday. However, even if the shop opens, there are not much presence of customers. Along with that, electricity supply being cut off.
Traders are living with huge uncertainty of electric supply and currently using charger lights, charger fan, and generators to cope with the situation. Shop owners are also blaming the lack of electricity connection in the market as the reason for the lack of buyers.
Mohammad Mohshin, the owner of the Setu Ladies and Baby Fashion of the Chandrima Market said that the sale being stopped even it is the last time before Eid going on. Since the beginning of this eid season the overall sell was below the strandard and then the fire ended everything.
”There is no electricity in the market from the Saturday, I don’t know when it will come”, he expressed with anxiety.
M. Al Amin, the owner of Fardeen Garments in Nurjahan Market, said to the journalists that after the fire on Saturday, people are thinking of the closure of New Market and its adjacent markets. But it is not true.
”We are seeking help from mass media to diffuse the information that other markets in New Market area are fully open and even some parts of New Market also ready to sell their products in the same arrangement before the incident ,” M. Al Amin added.
