6 killed as trucks collide in Bandarban

Six, including four women, were killed and at least 14 were injured after two trucks fell into a ditch as the two trucks collided head-on at Komlabazar Khara hill area of Ruma-Boga Lake road in Bandarban.
Ruma Sadar Union Parishad Chairman Shai Bang Marma confirmed the incident and said the injured were taken to Bandarban Sadar Hospital.
The incident took place around 1:30pm on Monday on the risky sloping road of Boga Lake area, said Ruma Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Alamgir Hossain.
Five of the deceased were identified as – two daughters of Hamnoy Karbari (village headman) of Ruma Remakri-Prangsha UP’s Theikang village Lim Moy Bom (37) and Varkim Bom (42), Jing Hom Bom (50), Songkhuv Bom’s daughter Lal Siam Bom (16) and Nemkhuv Bom’s daughter Noon Thar Moy Bom (37).
However, the identity of the driver, who also died in the accident, was not found.
Boga Lake Para resident Lalkim Bawm said four women were killed on the spot. Two, including a woman, succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. Five women belong to the Bom community and are residents of Thaikkongpara of Remakripransha.
The women met the tragic accident while they were going to Remakri union on a truck to collect money under Vulnerable Group Development Programme (VGDP).
“Some people were returning to Ruma by truck from Boga Lake. On the way, one truck lost control and rammed into another one, causing both the trucks to fall into a ditch,” he added.
Among the nine injured, three are in critical condition and currently undergoing treatment in Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Ruma Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Hossain said that police were sent to the spot. The injured were rescued and admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.
Jira Bom, chairman of Remakri Prangsa union said that four of the deceased were residents of ward-3 of the union.
On information, police and local people rushed to the spot and they were trying to rescue the victims.
The rescue operation is being disrupted due to the inclement weather in the area.
According to eyewitness and locals, a truck carrying 20 passengers was heading towards Ruma upazila sadar from Boga Lake. Another was coming from the opposite direction, from Ruma to Boga Lake. The two trucks collided head-on at Komlabazar Khara area around 1:30pm.
Ruma health and family planning officer Bamongpra Marma said 16 injured were admitted to the hospital for treatment. Of them, a Bom woman and a man belonging to Keyang community died while the 10 injured are being sent to Bandarban sadar hospital. The remaining four who received minor injuries are undergoing treatment at Ruma.
