Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha (RAJUK) has declared the demolition of 42 state buildings that are prone to earthquake.
The authorities asked to vacate the buildings by seven days upon receiving the notice.
RAJUK sent emails to the authorities concern on Tuesday in this regard.
RAJUK sources said that the buildings included 30 buildings belonging to the Education Engineering Department, four belonging to Jagannath University, three belonging to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), one of the Madrasah Education Board buildings, and another belonging to the Primary Education Department.
RAJUK also decreed the consolidation of 187 buildings of the Primary Education Department.
Based on a recent RAJUK-abetted survey titled Urban Resilience Project (URP), 3,252 state buildings around the capital are in precarious condition and hence are ordered to be torn down.
“We sent written decrees to the authorities concerned informing them that the buildings are at-risk. And they have been asked to vacate those buildings by seven days,” RAJUK Chairman, Md Anisur Rahman Miah said.
He said restoring these buildings are not cost effective that is why the authority is compelled to tear them down.
“As per the global standard, if the restoration cost is higher than 30 per cent of new construction, then the buildings ought to be torn down. So the ones we decided to tear down incur a cost of more than 30 per cent,” RAJUK Chairman said.
