DU forms probe committee look into extortion’s allegation

Dhaka University (DU) administration formed a committee to investigate the allegation of extortion against some of its proctorial team nearly half of a crore taka per year by allowing setting up of illegal shops in the campus and surrounding areas.
The university authority has informed the development through issuing a press release sent by the public relations office of the university on Thursday. The committee has also been asked to submit a report within two weeks.
Prof M. Maksudur Rahman of Geography and Environment Department has been made the convener of the investigation committee. Another two members are Assistant Proctor Liton Kumar Saha and Dr. Dilara Zahid, Associate Professor and Director of Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies.
A recent report however published in a national daily that a section of the DU Proctorial Mobile Team members, led by Md Shamim Hossain, a token man at Dhaka University (DU) Proctor Office, make over Tk 50 lakhs of extortion money every year from over 300 makeshift shops, illegally erected at different spots on the DU campus.
