At least three Bangladeshi students were killed and another is critically injured in a tragic road crash in Canada on Monday midnight (14 February).
The accident took place at 11:30 pm local time on Monday night on Highway 427 southbound ramp to Dundas Street West in Ontario.
The deceased persons have been identified as Shahriar Khan (20), Angela Barai (20) and Arian Deepta (17).
The injured youth has been identified as Nibir Kumar Dey, son of Bangladeshi prominent musician Kumar Biswajit. After the incident, Nibir Kumar was rushed to Etobicoke Hospital with serious injuries. Later he was transferred to St. Michael’s Hospital’s intensive care unit from Etobicoke Hospital. All four were living in Toronto on study permits from Bangladesh. Canadian authorities are yet to provide any further details about the victims.
Ontario Provincial Police Sargent Kerry Schmidt described the incident as a “very violent collision” that involved “extreme high rates of speed.”
He said that a vehicle carrying the four was running southbound when it left the ramp and went over a concrete wall into the ditch before crashing into another concrete wall.
The vehicle was then redirected back into the ramp, he said, where it then caught on fire.
“The fire department were on scene and were able to extricate all four occupants from that vehicle before being consumed by fire,” Schmidt said.
Two people in the back seat were pronounced dead at the scene. A female in the front passenger seat was rushed to a trauma centre, but was later pronounced dead, Schmidt said.
Authorities have already notified the families of the deceased. Police were called to the spot around 11:30pm (local time). The vehicle, which was reportedly speeding, had rolled over and caught fire.
Toronto Fire Services said fire fighters were required to put out the flames and rescue the trapped occupants.
