21 rescued Bangladeshis shifted to Ankara, 2 admitted to hospital
Staff Reporter :
At least 21 Bangladeshis who were stuck in the most earthquake-affected region in Turkiye have been shifted to the capital Ankara while two of them have been undergoing treatment in a hospital.
Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Seheli Sabrin came up with the statement during a weekly press briefing in the Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
“The 21 Bangladeshis who were stuck in the debris of the buildings were rescued and immediately shifted to Ankara. However, two of them have been admitted to hospital for improved treatment,” she said.
Those who are undergoing medical treatment are Bangladeshi students Nur-e-Alam and Md Golam Syed Rinku.
“The Bangladesh Mission in Turkiye is in
constant touch with them and their family members,” Sabrin said. Currently there are around 5,000 to 7000 Bangladeshis living in Turkiye, according to the Bangladesh Mission in Turkiye.
However, there is no death report of any Bangladeshi so far in the powerful earthquake that shattered both Turkiye and Syria, killing more than 17,000 people so far. A strong earthquake of 7.8 magnitude hit Turkey and Syria on Monday.
The epicentre of the earthquake was located at Turkey’s Gaziantep province along the border with Syria.
Soon after the earthquake, the Bangladesh Embassy there started collecting information of the Bangladeshis living there. Two hotlines were opened in Bangladesh Embassy in Turkiye for support to Bangladeshis there.
The earthquake has created a humanitarian crisis in Turkey and Syria and the governments of two countries urged the world community to extend their hands of cooperation.
Bangladesh has already sent a 61-member rescue team to Turkey and it will stay there for a week for humanitarian assistance and rescue operation.
