Two Sub-Inspectors (SIs) of Basan Police Station have been withdrawn in connection with the alleged death of a businessman due to police torture in Gazipur. Those two accused police are being interrogated by senior officials.
Meanwhile, after the incident, agitated locals blocked the highway halting traffic for two hours and vandalised police box and torched many vehicles, including three motorcycles of police.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police have formed a three-member committee in this incident. The two accused members of police have been identified as SI Mahbub Hossain and SI Nurul Islam.
The name of the victim deceased has been identified as Rabiul Islam (40). He was a resident of Bhogra Bypass Payarabagan area of Gazipur metropolis. He was a cotton merchant.
Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Abu Torab Shamsur Rahman confirmed the matter to the media and said that the cause of the businessman’s death is yet to be ascertained. But preliminary evidence has found that SI Nurul Islam and Mahbub Hossain were involved in arresting the businessman. Because of which they have been withdrawn on the orders of the Commissioner of Police. Apart from this, they are being questioned about the incident, the DC said.
According to locals and family members of the victim, Basan police arrested four people last Saturday night on the charge of gambling with bitcoins on mobile phones. The next day, the three accused were released, but the police detained businessman Rabiul Islam at the police station. On Tuesday night, a group of policemen including Sub Inspector (SI) Nurul Islam and Mahbub of Basan police station went to the Rabiul’s house and got a signature on a white paper from his wife. Later that night, the family members came to know that Rabiul had died.
Earlier, Rabiul and three other men were arrested by the police on charges of gambling.
