A former faculty member of Dhaka University (DU), Mohammad Azhar Jafar Shah, died on Friday evening who was imprisoned in the Dhaka central jail for death of a woman whom he dragged under his car on DU campus more than a month ago.
Police said that Azahar Jafar Shah (56), a former teacher of DU, was declared dead after he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the afternoon.
Rafiqul Islam, a prison guard of Dhaka central jail at Keraniganj, said that as the teacher suddenly felt sick in the afternoon, the prison authorities ordered him to take the teacher to the hospital.
Jafar Shah was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). In the afternoon, but he breathed his last after he was taken there, he added.
The in-charge of DMCH medical outpost, Bacchu Mia, said that he was taken to the hospital at 3:33 pm from the prison. Later, the on-duty physician pronounced him dead.
Azhar Jafar Shah,an Associate Professor of the International Relations (IR) department, was sacked from Dhaka University in 2018 due to his prolonged absence.
Meanwhile, Azahar suffered a mob beating after he dragged Rubina Akter (45) underneath his car for a kilometer on the campus on second December.
He was arrested by police in a case filed over the incident and underwent treatment at DMCH and was transferred from the hospital to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on first January.
Aminur Rahman, Keraniganj Jail’s Deputy Jailer, said that Jafar shah suffered from head injuries and had been undergoing treatment at the jail hospital since the shift.
On January 8, his condition deteriorated in the jail hospital and was shifted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for the reason.
After getting treatment, he was sent back to the jail hospital at BSMMU on the corresponding day, he added.
However, his condition again deteriorated in the afternoon on Friday and was immediately shifted to DMCH where doctors declared him dead, the jail official said.
“The post-mortem examination report will disclose the reason behind the death”.
