The government has extended the tenure of Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for 18 months till 11 July 2024 on a contract basis.
Home Ministry issued a circular in this regard on Monday (January 9).
According to the circular, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun’s post retirement leave and related benefits have been suspended as per Section 49 of the Public Service Act 2018 and he has been appointed as Police chief for a period of one-and-half-year from January 12 or the date of joining.
Mamun, a former director general of the Rapid Action Battalion, was appointed IGP on 30 September this year, after the retirement of police chief Benazir Ahmed.
This is the first time the government has extended the retirement age of an inspector general of police.
Earlier, the government had rejected former IGP Benazir Ahmed’s application for a one-year extension on his tenure.
