Coast Guard seized Indian sarees worth around Tk 22 crore from the Meghna river in Bhola which was brought by dishonest businessmen dodging tarrif.
Coast Guard at Headquarters’ Media Officer Lt. Commander Abdur Rahman gave this information on Thursday. He said that a special operation was conducted by BCG Base Bhola under Bangladesh Coast Guard South Zone in the Meghna River near Tulatli under Sadar Upazila of Bhola district on Tuesday. Staff Officer (Operations), Bhola, Lieutenant M Mominul Islam led the operation.
The BCG found an engine-driven wooden boat in the expedition in suspicious movement. Then the Coast Guard signaled the boat to stop, but the boat attempted to escape at high speed. Later, the Coast Guard fired four rounds of blanks to stop the boat, the smugglers left the boat beside the sand and fled.
Later, they searched the boat named FB Abid and found 17824 pieces of various types of Indian sarees, 166 pieces of three pieces and 6442 pieces of medical items. The estimated market value of the seized items was Tk 21,90,75,000/00 ( twenty one crore, ninety lakh and seventy five thousand taka).
The BCG officer said that the seized goods and boats were handed over to Bhola Sadar police station for further legal action.
