Farmers disappointed at low prices of new onion in Ishwardi

The sale of new onions has started in various markets of Ishwardi. This time there has been a bumper yield of onions. A maximum production of 85 maunds per bigha has been reported here. But the farmers are disappointed because of not getting fair price. On Monday morning, fresh onions were sold at the price of Tk 800-880 per mound and Tk 20-22 per kg at the raw material market of Ishwardi. And in the retail market, good cut onions are being sold at Tk 25 per kg. In Ishwardi, most of the onions are produced in the grazing areas of Lakshikunda, Pakshi and Sara Unions.
Mohiul Islam, a farmer of Bilkedar village in Lakshikunda, said that the price at which we are selling onions is causing losses. If I could sell onions at the rate of Tk 1,300 per person, I could at least bring home the cost.
A lot of money has been spent on various sectors including land rent, labour, fertilizers and poisons. Onion farmer Taher Ali said, I have grown onion on 8 bigha land. I am worried about the increase in the cost of production at the current price of onions.
Bashir Ahmed, a wholesale onion trader, said that traders from different districts of the country, including Dhaka, come here to buy onions due to the huge demand for onions here. However, this onion cannot be stored for long. That’s why the farmers pick onions from the field and sell them quickly in the local bazaar.
The price of onion has decreased in various markets. According to standards, new onions are being sold at Tk 800-880 per maund.
