‘Repatriation of Rohingyas delayed due to lack of sincerity’

Staff Reporter :
Despite assurances and agreement, the Myanmar Junta government has not yet taken back a single Rohingya to their homeland in the last five years.
The government of Bangladesh said that Myanmar government still did not say that they would not take back their people, but they have not received a single Rohingya because of their lack of sincerity.
“Myanmar did not say that they would not take back the Rohingya. We have told Myanmar to take them back. We have told Myanmar to make arrangement so that the Rohingyas can return voluntarily. They said they would do it. They have agreed on all matters, but in the last five years they have not taken a single Rohingya,” Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul
Momen said on Sunday. Responding to a query of the journalists after a programme in Sylhet city, Foreign Minister said, “We have continued our efforts to send the Rohingyas to their homeland. Our efforts are going on at bilateral, trilateral and even multilateral levels. We have gone to court as well.”
Mentioning the Rohingya infiltration inside Bangladesh in different periods, the minister said, “The Rohingyas came to our country in 70s, 80s and 90s. Later they returned to Myanmar through dialogue. This time the number is huge. It is about 11 lakh.”
He, however, said that Myanmar has created the Rohingya crisis and its solution lies with them.
“Bangladesh has been continuing its efforts to repatriate the Rohingyas. But it is not the responsibility of Bangladesh alone. It is also the duty of super powers,” he added.
About the sending of some Rohingyas to other countries, Dr Momen said, “We have undertaken a new project to send some of the Rohingyas to Europe and America. Bangladesh is a densely populated country. Some 2,900 people live per square kilometre. In America, it is only 40 people while in Europe it is 15-25 people.”
“Every man has the right to live. So we have told Europe and America to receive some Rohingyas. The process has started. But it is a drop of water in the ocean.”
