Govt to take action in time against foreign diplomats
Staff Reporter :
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said that the government would take action in time against the foreign diplomats who would meddle in the internal affairs breaking the code of conduct.
He issued the statement in response to the journalists after inaugurating the first ‘International Charity Bazaar’ organised by the Foreign Office Spouses’ Association (FOSA) at the Foreign Service Academy.
“The USA expelled some 20-21 Russian diplomats on allegations of interference in their last election. In addition, even US organisations that they felt had cooperated with Russia were closed with sanctions,” he said.
“They can take such steps easily because they are powerful countries. But we don’t have that power or capacity. So we did not take action. But we will also go for action in time,” he continued.
The Foreign Minister made such remarks following the recent comments made by foreign diplomats including the USA, Japan, UK, Turkey, and some other EU countries about the past and upcoming general election in Bangladesh.
Mentioning that many countries, image had been destroyed for foreign intervention, Dr Momen said, “Look at Afghanistan, they are in great trouble due to foreign interference. Chile has been destroyed by foreigners. Think about Iran. Foreigners in fact work for their own interests.”
He also said that the developed countries did not care about the foreign diplomats.
“It has become a custom in our country to go to foreigners. It is unfortunate. In India, the foreigners speak about various things, but they don’t pay heed to it. The countries which have respect and leadership do not knock on the doors
of the foreigners to whine,” he observed.
About the code of conduct for the foreign diplomats, the Foreign Minister said, “If the foreigners want to convey anything, they can tell it to the government following the code of conduct.”
The minister also urged the media to be more mature regarding the comments of the foreigners in the mass media.
“Our media has to be more mature. The foreigners in the past tried to influence us in various ways and talked on different issues. People will cast votes as per their choices. I have profound trust in people who never do wrong to give mandate,” Dr Momen said.
He also suggested the opposition BNP not to knock on the doors of the foreigners on any issue.
“We should go to the people living in the villages instead of visiting the foreigners. If our opposition political parties do not go to the foreigners, it will be good for them as well as for the country. The country is ours,” he added.
