Consumers continue to suffer because of high price

Consumers are still unable to get relief from the rising prices of kitchen markets in Kishoreganj .
The prices of almost all the essential commodities including rice, atta, soyabean oil, vegetables, red lentil and onions went up on the kitchen markets in Kishoreganj over last week. .
Retailers said that corrupt wholesalers, mill owners and distributes increased the prices of rice and edible oil on the market. They said that the supply of edible oil had also decreased in kitchen markets.
The prices of both the red lentil and onions went up on kitchen markets due to the off-seasonal supply shortage, traders said.
The prices of rice increased by Tk 4 to 5 a kg over the week and the coarse variety of rice sold for Tk 55 to 65 per kg in Bara Bazar of Kishoreganj town on Thursday.
The medium-quality variety of rice sold for Tk 58-68 a kilogram while the BR-28 variety, also known as a lower-grade Miniket, retailed at Tk 64 -70 a kg.
The fine-variety of Miniket sold for Tk 68-78 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 80-90 a kilogram on the day
The prices of soya bean oil increased by Tk 2-3 a litre and unpackaged soya bean oil was sold for Tk 170 to 180 a litre in Kishoreganj’s kitchen markets.
Packaged soya bean oil was sold for Tk 178-180 a litre.
The prices of onions increased by Tk 5 a kilogram over the week and the local variety of onions sold for Tk 5O kilogram while the imported variety sold for Tk 40 to 42 a kig on Thursday. The prices of most of the vegetables increased by Tk 5-10 a kilogram even though the winter vegetables have started to hit the market.
Aubergine sold for Tk 70-80 a kg papaya for Tk 25-30 a kg , bitter gourd for Tk 70-80 a kilogram, bottle gourd for Tk 60-80 apiece, cucumber for Tk 50-60 a kilogram, pointed gourd for Tk 60 a kilogram, bean for Tk 80-100 a kilogram, potatoes for Tk 25-30 a kilogram, carrot for Tk 120-130 a kilogram and tomatoes for Tk 80 to 100 a kg. Green chillies sold for Tk 50 to 60 a kg.
The price of sugar still remained high and the item was sold for Tk 115 to 125 a kg. The price of broiler chicken remained high and the item sold for Tk 160 to -170 a kg on the day The price of Sonalika variety of chicken increased by Tk 10 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 290 -320 a kg.
