BNP’s ex-MP Sultana Ahmed on two-day remand
Staff Reporter :
Former BNP lawmaker for reserved seat Sultana Ahmed has been put on two-day remand for interrogation in a case under Digital Security Act (DSA) for allegedly making derogatory comments on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
BNP strongly protested her arrest, saying it was the ‘government’s wrath’ and none, even women leaders, is safe from the vengeance of the government.
They demanded immediate release of the ex-MP.
Earlier, a metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Sunday granted the remand when police produced her in the court after being arrested in the capital after she was returning from BNP’s Barishal rally on Saturday.
Responding to a petition filed by Paltan Police Station Sub-Inspector Ashraful Alam, Metropolitan magistrate Shahidur Islam passed the order against Sultana, also the General Secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal.
Police sought a five-day remand for interrogation, but the court granted for two-day.
Earlier, the case against Sultana was filed by former President of Gopalganj District Chhatra League Abdul Hamid on Sunday under DSA for her alleged derogatory comments on the Prime Minister during a party programme on September 1.
Following the case, a team of Rapid Action Battalion detained her at her Gulshan home in Dhaka and handed her to the Paltan Police Station, Officer-in-Charge of Paltan Police Station Salahuddin said.
About her arrest, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a discussion meeting organised by Nagorik Oikya in the Jatiya Press Club on Sunday said that the government had to take the responsibility if she was not freed.
“Sultana returned to Dhaka after attending the Barishal rally. When she was going to her residence, RAB detained her from Hatkhola. If she is not freed, the government has to shoulder the responsibility,” he added.
In a press conference at the BNP Headquarters in the capital on Sunday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, “When Sultana Ahmed reached Dhaka after the Barishal rally, she was arrested by RAB on her way to home.”
Criticising the incident, he said, “This incident is inhumane. It is a disrespectful act against an honourable woman leader. It is an expression of the government’s personal anger.”
He said that not only the male leaders and workers of the opposition, also the female leaders are not safe from the government’s wrath.
He demanded the release of the BNP woman leader immediately.
