For the first time in Bangladesh, votes cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were recounted following an order from a tribunal, Election Commission has said.
A notification signed by Election Commission Joint Secretary SM Asaduzzaman said that on February 1, 2020, the general election at Ward No. 6 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) was conducted through EVMs. A recount of those votes was ordered by the tribunal.
A candidate of the ward filed a case with a tribunal for recounting the votes. Later, an order was issued from the tribunal in this regard, reads the notification.
The Election Commission formed a five-members under the leadership of the director general of the Electoral Training Institute in this regard. The committee recounted the votes on Saturday.
There was no difference between the original results and the recount of votes.
The notification also mentions that it is possible to recount the votes cast through EVMs.
For the recounting, the sealed bags of election materials are reopened. Later the audit card is inserted into the EVM machine to check the result and compare it with the result declared on election day.
