Though it is a nightmare for independent journalism, still the Daily New Nation has survived 42 years through hardship and dedication to journalism for telling the truth without submitting to the lies of the government, Barrister Mainul Hosein, Chairman, Editorial Board, The New Nation said on Monday while addressing the 43rd founding anniversary of The New Nation at Manik Mia Foundation in the capital.
“But the government by ravaging all values, honesty, ideology, human dignity and human rights has made the people angry and restless for whatever is to happen for change. It is shameless for the government to observe Constitutional Day when the Constitution is to be found in the museum,” he added.
Among others, valiant freedom fighters Iqbal Hossain Forkan, ATM Golam Mowla Chowdhury, Editor of New Nation Md Mokarram Hossain, Editor of the weekly Robbar Syed Tosharaf Ali, National People’s Party (NPP) Chairman Dr Fariduzzaman Farhad, Chairman of Bangladesh Human Rights Monitoring Council Md Nurul Huda Milu Chowdhury, Secretary General of NPP Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa and Presidum Member of Jatiya Party Prof. Md Iqbal Hossain Raju, were present. Chief Reporter of The New Nation Anisur Rahman Khan moderated the event.
The speakers said that the government does not feel the necessity of newspapers and the journalists are now under awe and fear.
Iqbal Hossain Forkan said, “We the freedom fighters handed over the State in the hands of the political leaders. But in the last 52 years, neither any government nor any party has established the true spirit of Liberation War. They did not establish democracy, good governance and people’s ownership. Rather, all tried to cling to power.”
He felt the need for a true democratic leader for the recovery of the country to guide it on the right path.
Syed Tosharaf Ali said, “The journalist community has lost the courage to debunk
the falsehood. All the professional bodies have been shattered into pieces. Now the owners of the media are big businessmen and realtors.”
Regarding the social degradation, he said, “Our new generations do not want to stay in the country. They think that residing in Bangladesh means living in poverty and misery. The honour and respect are no longer in the country.”
