Staff Reporter :
The day-long huge traffic gridlock on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway’s Tongi extended till Banani Chairmanbari in the capital on Wednesday.
The tailback affected the movement of transports on the other streets in the city and created acute sufferings to the commuters.
Due to the long time traffic gridlock, commuters, especially office-going people and school-college going students, knew not what to be done.
All the vehicles were seen standoff on the street in that area and the line of vehicles were getting longer.
The traffic congestions were seen from Tongi’s Millgate area to Dhaka’s Banani Chairmanbari area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Road and Tongi’s Board Bazar area on the Dhaka-bound street from the early morning.
One of the main reasons behind that traffic gridlock was waterlogging from the incessant rainfall caused by the previous day’s cyclone Sitrang.
Meanwhile, the road repair work in different areas of Gazipur is also responsible for the incident.
Commuters on the road said they had been stuck on Tongi Station Road for several hours till afternoon.
The road from Abdullahpur to Chandona Avenue in Gazipur has shrunken due to the ongoing work of the BRT project. Besides, vehicular movement from Banani to Airport was seen stopped on the road for hours after hours. Earlier, Police have asked the citizens to avoid the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway as large portions of it have been flooded due to the heavy rainfall during the Cyclone Sitrang. In SMS notification, the police on Tuesday said that several sections of the pothole-riddled highway into Gazipur via Khilkhet and Uttara in the capital city were submerged by heavy overnight rains.
