19 tanneries to be shut to protect rivers from pollutions

The Parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Thursday decided to shut 19 tanneries in Savar to protect rivers from being polluted and to protect bio-diversities.
The ministry said that those 19 tanneries have not been applied for getting environmental clearance certificate yet.
The committee took the decision with a view to protecting river pollution and keeping bio-diversities protected.
The meeting was chaired by the committee President Saber Hossain Chowdhury.
Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shahab Uddin, Deputy Minister Habibun Nahar, and the committee members Tanveer Shakeel Joy, Zafar Alam and Khodeja Nasreen Akhtar participated in the meeting.
The committee also decided to renew clearance certificate for 19 other enterprises that have fulfilled the court’s orders and installed compliances.
It also decided to give clearance certificates to 112 more enterprises which have applied for it.
The committee also suggested to severe gas, electricity and other pipelines to those tanneries which never applied for a clearance certificate.
“We have decided to close those tanneries which have ignored the law and never applied for getting an environmental clearance certificate,” Saber Hossain Chowdhury told journalists.
As per the list of the ministry, the suspended factories are M/s Nishat Tannery, Ibrahim Tannery, M/s City Leather, M/s Sabuj Corporation, M/s MA Leather, M/s Metro Tannery, M/s Moon Tannery, M/s Lien Enterprises, M/s International Tannery, Mumtaz Tannery, Zindabad Tannery, M/s Golden Leather Ind., Zaman Tannery, M/s Sahi Tannery, Falu Leather Corporation, Hitech Leather, Ismail Leather, S&S Tannery, M/s Zaheer Tannery.
 The meeting also decided to be strict over stopping illegal sand lifting from Cox’bazar sea beach.
It also decided to expose Bangladesh’s achievements and activities in favour of keeping environment sound in the upcoming COP-27 conference.
